We are a family of 5 currently living in the Pacific Northwest. We have three daughters (our first daughter was my "surprise" at 19, Mike adopted her in 2009) and family spread out all around the world (my parents are in Egypt, his in California). I blog to keep my family up to date on our happenings and to document our kids lives... I'm hoping that one day they will appreciate this online journal of their childhood :)

I am also a photographer in Seattle-Tacoma, Washington. You can find me over at kipperphotography.com. Thanks for stopping by!

Scarlett's Room

So let's start with the BEFORE pics. The room looked like the pic on the right when we bought the house. I fell in love with the bunk beds the instant I saw them. The character, the charm, everything about them equaled love for me... well except the mattresses. We replaced those old dusty things and let me tell you, the new ones are so comfy (I highly recommend Seattle Mattress Company, they made custom sized mattresses for the bunks -- no I was not paid to write that, I just love using local companies! :)

I did my best to update this room for Addie, but I HATED the wood walls. They made everything look dingy. I asked my friends on Facebook if we should paint them and (to my surprise) the overwhelming consensus was "NO!" everybody said the wood walls were amazing and gorgeous and "don't you dare paint them!"...but two years of living with walls that I secretly hated (I mean how could I openly admit to hating something everyone else loved?!?) I decided I was done with them. We moved Addie out of the room last fall and started transforming this into Scarlett's room. I'm not going to lie, before we knew she was a girl, I envisioned going hardcore on a boat theme in here. I had to take a different direction, but I do love how it turned out. We went with a soft, neutral, beachy theme (and re-used Addie's old stuff -- which I stupidly paid way too much for -- pregnant people, here's a tip: don't buy the comforter sets!).

Here's what we did in this room during the reno:

1) Re-wired the room with new electrical
2) Installed baseboard heater (so ugly, but the only thing that could be done in our house... the heater guys said putting internal heat would be upwards of $20K, umm definitely NOT worth it).
3) Installed chandelier
4) Added reading lights in the bunkbeds (Mike LOVES those lights)
5) Put up crown molding
6) Added intercom system (whole house is now intercommed -- very handy with three floors and a husband who works outside in our detached garage office)
7) Converted hidden storage behind wall into Scarlett's closet. See that door in the pic below? That is a huge (for an 80+ year old house) walk in closet that I took over the second we moved in. Poor Mike suffers with our teeny-tiny bedroom closet. Luckily Scarlett doesn't know or care that I stole her closet, tee hee.
8) Stained door
9) Painted walls and ceilings (the blue wall was painted by us when we moved in)
10) I hung up lots of stuff ... and then Mike had to rehang all the stuff that I hung, because I suck. lol

Oh and let me address the glaringly obvious item missing from the nursery...her crib. No we haven't put up the crib yet. She still sleeps in the rock 'n play sleeper and the pack 'n play and her swing for naps. Honestly, I really don't want to put up the crib. I think it will ruin the room... but, most likely we'll eventually stick it in front of the bunk beds. Addie got out of the crib at 20ish months, so we don't have too long to go till we can be crib-less again :)

Chandelier & curtains - Ikea  (I cut the curtains hanging over the heater, but really wanted them floor length)
View from inside the bunkbeds. Bedspreads/lamp shade/diaper thing from Cocala Couture Delilah collection, Paint is Seaspray by Glidden.
8x10 area rug from overstock.com
See those adorable reading lights?!? It used to be so dark in there.
Billy ball painting done by my sister Kate (requested by me, thank you sis!)
This is looking through the little portal window in her bedroom door.
Matching mirror and painting in frame from Ikea. My sister Kate gave me the painting back in '09 to match Addie's bedspread. We painted the black frames brown to match the room.
This boat painting was original to the bedroom. We mounted it above the window. I wonder who painted it?
View of our garage from Scarlett's room. Mike's office is up on top where that window is.
I took the pic and made it into a canvas. I painted the Scarlett sign hanging above her door and I got the big letter from Joann's, then painted it yellow to match the room. That door is to the big walk-in closet that I stole from Scarlett. :)
That little side table is so sturdy. I got it from urbanoutfitters.com
Chair was $20 used, bought it years ago for Addie's room. It rocks. I <3 it.
Lamp is from Ikea. I replaced the shade.

Shelf has an old vintage ABC book, picture of the girls and my sister. Diaper holding thing hanging off Scarlett's closet door. A few of my old baby clothes are hanging from the pegs. The hat was knitted by my great grandma years and years ago. :)

Those circle windows open up to the stairs below. Don't worry, they lock and they are seriously hard to open. I am pretty sure they are real windows from an old submarine or something. They are insanely heavy.

The details are amazing. Mr. Glaze was the original owner of this house. He was a Dutch sea captain. He had a wife and two kids. I bet they loved this room.

Left: little crawl space to attic                                                        Right: Scarlett's closet

Sand from the local beach. The two items to the left are original to the room. Everything else I got at thrift stores. Mike says I'm a hoarder. I just love glass jars.

Bedspreads are from Ikea. They are the Ofelia blankets.
White paint is by Behr, called Seaside Sand. We found the perfect white for our house and have used it in almost every room!
My sisters paintings above and below.

  3. I am so in love with this room! Every detail is beautiful. The walls look great white! I am not a fan of wood walls either and I would have painted them too!

  4. Scarlett's room is pretty much exactly what I've been wanting to do for Emmie's nursery...except I have absolutely no vision! I love the underlying nautical theme and that one blue wall is gorgeous! (What color is it?)

  5. Oh that is so beautiful! I love it! And what a cool history to your house, a Dutch sea captain and his family! So neat. Do you know why they moved from the house originally? Maybe back to Holland? so interesting, and Scarlett is too cute!

  7. Thanks everyone! I'm so glad it's finally finished!

Robyn - I don't know why they moved, they were only here for about 10 years or so, the next family that moved in lived here for a long time. When we first bought the house I did a ton of research about the old owners. I even contacted a Wash. U professor that I found online w/ the same name as the original owners son, but it wasn't him (he probably thought I was weird, ha!).

I'd love to find the old owners and chat about the house. We know one of them worked at the old timber mill here until it closed down and we know about the sea captain, but that's it. Oh and someone had plans drawn up to build a pool in our backyard...soooo glad that didn't happen.

Nikki - Thank you! It's seaspray by glidden, here's the link:

  8. I love her room! And I love how you painted the wood white, but left the inside of the bunkbeds the natural color. I think that adds to the nautical theme of the room. Gorgeous!

  9. Carolyn, you are amazing!
I sure have an eye for decorating. It looks like your house came out of a magazine - it's gorgeous!
Next time we move, I will certainly put some thought into each room.

  14. Where did you get the chandelier? I'm having trouble finding light fixtures I like that are priced well for our almost 3-yar-old & our newest addition (due to arrive in a couple of weeks). I feel your renovation pain during your pregnancy--we're not doing quite as much as you but we moved in on Christmas eve and my husband is in the midst of gutting & remodeling the kitchen as well as laying hardwood throughou the whole downstairs. Our nursery is still pretty much a storage area that I need to get organized in a couple of weeks--this little one better not come early!!! (Thanks for my mini-vent!)

  16. kparks - chandelier is from Ikea. Oh man, I don't envy you right now, renovating + pregnancy is no fun at all. :( Hang in there. It will be worth it when it's done!
